It is tough to go wrong when selecting from Badaling or Mutianyu when choosing which Great Wall sections to visit. Badaling, built to protect the capital from northern attacks, is the best preserved part of the wall, the closest to Beijing, and the most popular area to visit. Mutianyu meanwhile, is slightly further away, less crowded and includes cable car, lift and toboggan options for traversing sections of the wall.

The magnificent Dingling Tomb is one of the 13 Ming Dynasty Tombs and consists of an underground palace, thousands of cultural relics and treasures, and also as the mausoleum of Emperor Zhu Yijun and his two empresses, Xiaoduan and Xiaojing, Zhu Yijun who occupied the throne for 48 years, longer than any other Ming Dynasty emperors.

Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) is an iconic landmark in China and now the ruins of a magnificent architectural wonder and complex of palaces, gardens, temples, halls and pavilions. The Yuanmingyuan grounds are huge and a small amount of restoration has taken place including some temples, lakes and waterways. There are also ongoing and considerable efforts being made to have treasures and relics returned to the site for all visitors to enjoy.
